Maxwell Maltz, M.D. was an American cosmetic surgeon and self-help author. He proposed that one can improve self-image through visualization and goal-setting, to lead to a more successful and fulfilling life—a concept that has influenced modern self-help movements. Maltz graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1923 and practiced as a plastic surgeon, where he observed how physical transformations often failed to improve his patients’ self-perceptions. In addition to his self-help work, Maltz authored fiction, a play, and his autobiography, Doctor Pygmalion, later retitled Doctor Psycho-Cybernetics.
